What to Test on the Water Before Committing to a Purchase

A sea trial is the single most revealing part of buying any RIB, new or used, and shouldn’t be skipped. Static inspection tells you a lot, but only on-water testing reveals how the boat actually performs and handles.

This guide provides a structured checklist to follow during a sea trial, covering everything worth testing before you buy.

First of all

Respect the material and the owner. He or she will likely show you how the RIB behaves before handing over the wheel.

Put safety first and treat the RIB as if it were yours. Bear in mind that you cannot test the RIB in all weather and sea conditions.

A boat’s maximum top speed can’t always be reached due to varying conditions.

Of you don’t buy it, ask the owner it you need to cover a cost. It’s being polite.

Why a Sea Trial Is Essential

Many issues, from engine hesitation to hull vibration to handling quirks, only appear once the boat is genuinely underway. A seller reluctant to allow a proper sea trial should raise immediate concerns about the boat’s condition.

Before You Start the Trial

Check that all safety equipment required by law is aboard before heading out on any sea trial.

Note weather and sea conditions beforehand, since these significantly affect what the trial will actually reveal.

Where possible, trial the boat in conditions similar to how you’d typically use it, not just flat calm water.

Starting and Warm-Up Checks

Confirm the engine starts promptly, whether cold or warm, without excessive cranking or hesitation.

Check that all gauges read normally during warm-up: temperature, oil pressure, and voltage should behave as expected.

Listen for unusual noise during warm-up, since problems often reveal themselves before the engine reaches full operating temperature.

Acceleration and Planing Performance

Test acceleration from idle to planing speed, noting how quickly and smoothly the boat comes onto plane.

Excessive bow rise, hesitation, or difficulty reaching plane can indicate trim issues, hull problems, or engine underperformance.

Top Speed and Cruising Speed Behaviour

Run the boat at a comfortable cruising speed, checking for smooth, stable handling without excessive vibration.

If safe and appropriate, test top speed too, checking for any concerning behaviour at the upper end of performance.

Note fuel consumption during the trial if possible, useful for comparing against manufacturer or seller claims.

Handling and Steering Response

Test steering response at various speeds, checking for play, stiffness, or delayed response that could indicate hydraulic issues.

Perform turns at moderate speed, checking that the boat responds predictably without excessive lean or instability.

Testing in Waves or Chop If Possible

If conditions allow safely, test the boat’s behaviour in some chop, revealing ride quality and hull performance under real conditions.

Note any excessive slamming, spray patterns that reduce visibility, or handling quirks that only appear in rougher water.

Checking Trim and Tilt Underway

Test power trim adjustment while underway, noting its effect on ride comfort, bow rise, and overall handling.

Confirm the trim system responds smoothly and holds its position without drifting or requiring constant adjustment.

Listening for Unusual Noises

Pay attention to any vibration, knocking, or unusual noise from the engine, hull, or steering system throughout the trial.

Noise that appears only at certain speeds or under load can indicate issues worth investigating further before purchase.

Post-Trial Engine Check

After the trial, check the engine for any new leaks, unusual smells, or overheating that appeared during operation.
