RIBs ONLY Author: Meet Robin Kilroy

Robin Kilroy @ RIBs ONLY - Home of the Rigid Inflatable Boat

Robin Kilroy aka VISTATREKKER

I welcome Robin as a RIBs ONLY author.

Meet him and dive into his action-packed YouTube channel full of thrilling adventures.

Robin joined the merchant navy as a cadet at 17 and remained at Sea for 10 years. 5 years of this was with the British Antarctic Survey.

It was in the British Antarctic Survey that Robin’s experience of RIB work began in ernest. The British Antarctic Survey had both ships and airplanes all working closely together. From this work he caught the flying bug.

Having qualified as a Captain with a Deep Sea Master Mariner’s certificate, he then began at the bottom once again as a cadet but this time in aviation.

Over two decades later he is still flying for a living. Robin reflects that while work now seems very far from those earlier years crossing the pacific with little more than a sextant, strangely it is still also very close to it in many ways.

It is still all about the game of trying to negotiate a working solution between the limitations of your ship and Nature’s power.

Acknowledging that a fair few miles have now passed beneath his keel, Robin realises at this stage of life that it really doesn’t matter how far you travel.

It just matters how closely you look.

It is in that mindset that you might now find him messing around in RIBs, Canoes, Tents and the great outdoors either on a trail, afloat or stepping ashore in the surf.

In recent years Robin has become fascinated by the completeness of videography as a means of communicating the huge distance even a small trip can take us as we try to steal away from the race. This is where the RIB Adventures series on YouTube comes in.

Extraordinary experiences can and should be part of ordinary life.

RIB Adventures’ Step by Step Night Launch

Prepping for a Night Launch.

In episode 14 of RIB Adventures, Robin (aka VISTATREKKER) takes you on a thrilling offshore journey.

He heads out across the Irish Sea.

His goal is to reach the isolated Kish Bank Lighthouse aboard a compact 5.5-meter RIB.

This installment focuses on the essential steps for preparing a mall RIB for a flawless trailer night launch.

This is particularly challenging under nighttime conditions.

With darkness adding complexity, the importance of thorough preparation becomes even more evident.

RIB Adventure in a January Dawn by VISTATREKKER

A VISTATREKKER Story Worth Watching

.I was instantly drawn to Robin’s video style. He’s a fantastic storyteller, and this video proves it once again.

This episode follows a mid-winter dawn run in the Irish Sea aboard two RIBs (see specs below).

Launching from Skerries before sunrise, the crew heads out into the darkness, chasing the first light of day.

They reach Rockabill Lighthouse just as the sun breaks the horizon, casting golden light across the sea.

The journey continues south to Lambay Island.

They they stop for coffee above the wreck of the RMS Tayleur—sometimes called the “first Titanic.”

After circling the island, they push north again through the cold.

They return to Skerries to recover the boats and warm up.

VISTATREKKER’s RIB is an Nividic 550 Aluminium 3D Tender Rigid Inflatable Boat, fitted with a Suzuki DF100 on a Bunk Trailer*.

His friend used a Lencraft 620 RIB with a Honda 130 on a roller trailer.

His video as published on the VISTATREKKER YouTube channel. Highly recommended!
