Attaching a handle or patch to a Hypalon (CSM) inflatable boat tube requires precision, proper technique, and the right tools.

This guide walks through the standard procedure professional technicians use to secure Hypalon accessories onto inflatable tubes.
Required Tools and Materials
Before starting the installation, ensure all necessary equipment is on hand:
- Materials:
- Hypalon handle or patch accessory
- Two-part Hypalon adhesive (2-component contact cement)
- 3/4-inch blue painter’s masking tape
- Rigid cardboard (for creating a support template)
- Technical acetone
- Clean, lint-free rags
- Tools:
- Buffing wheel or abrasive sanding pad
- Directional marker or pencil
- Heat gun or heat reactivation tool
- Plastic or bone boning tool / seam roller
- Glue application brush
Step-by-Step Installation Process
Step 1: Backing Preparation & Orientation Tracing
The technician verifies that the backside of the Hypalon handle is thoroughly pre-buffed.
- The handle is positioned in its designated location on the Hypalon tube, and the outline is traced directly onto the fabric.
- A matching directional arrow is drawn on both the tube and the handle.
- Technician Tip: The alignment arrow should point directly toward the technician’s standing position. This ensures the handle is re-applied in the exact orientation in which it was traced.
Step 2: Precision Masking & Edge Taping
To maintain clean edges and prevent adhesive overflow:
- The technician applies 3/4-inch blue painter’s tape along the traced outline on the tube.
- The straight outer sections are taped first to form a clean border.
- Smaller, overlapping tape strips are used around curved corners and tight radiuses. This tight border simplifies cleanup after the installation.
Step 3: Creating a Handle Stabilization Jig
Flexible strap handles tend to move or warp during adhesive application. To ensure a flat, stable surface:
- The technician prepares a piece of rigid cardboard.
- A three-sided rectangular slot is cut out of the cardboard.
- The cardboard jig is slipped beneath the handle strap, creating a flat gluing surface that holds the handle base steady during the process.
Step 4: Surface Abrasion (Buffing the Tube)
Creating a mechanical key for the adhesive is essential for bond strength:
- The technician abrades the masked area on the Hypalon tube using a buffing wheel or sanding tool.
- Visual Benchmark: Proper abrasion is reached when the glossy surface of the fabric transitions into a uniform matte finish.
- CRITICAL WARNING: The technician must never buff through the outer coating into the underlying fabric mesh (substrate). Over-buffing damages the material strength and can cause air leaks in the tube.
Step 5: Applying Two Coats of Hypalon Glue
Hypalon adhesives require a two-coat application on both contact surfaces:
- The technician applies the first coat of two-part adhesive evenly to both the abraded handle backing and the taped area on the tube.
- The first coat is left to dry until it reaches a tack-free state.
- A second coat of adhesive is applied to both surfaces and allowed to cure according to manufacturer specifications.
Step 6: Heat Reactivation & Initial Attachment
Once the glue has dried sufficiently:
- The technician gently warms both coated surfaces using a heat tool to reactivate the contact adhesive.
- The handle is oriented with the alignment arrow facing away from the technician.
- The top edge of the handle patch is aligned with the top edge of the blue masking tape.
- The technician lowers the center of the patch first, pressing down lightly along the middle and working outward toward the sides to prevent air pockets.
Step 7: Contouring Base Structures & Final Burnishing
Strap handles often feature raised circular mounting bases underneath, which vary in height compared to the surrounding fabric.
- As the technician works outward from the center, firm pressure is applied around these round base sections.
- A plastic or bone boning tool is used to “cut in” and contour the patch tightly around the circular base structures.
- Once contoured, the technician burnishes the entire patch firmly from the center outward to ensure total chemical bonding.
Step 8: Edge Cleanup & Mandatory Curing Period
- The technician peels off the blue masking tape.
- Excess adhesive squeeze-out along the edges is cleaned using a rag dampened with technical acetone and a boning tool where necessary.
- MANDATORY CURE TIME: The newly attached Hypalon accessory or patch must cure undisturbed for at least 72 hours before the tube is re-pressurized or put under operational load.
