How to Install a Rope on a RIB Tube

Rope Installation – Tools and Procedure

Our extensive collection of how-to articles continues to grow with this blog post. The series has a broad perspective as you will notice when you take a peek.

Prior to posting this video by ASIS, I consulted a professional and trusted source. I contacted Sam Tilley from InflatableRepairs and RIBstore about the techniques used.

“Overall, it’s an interesting technique,” she said.

“Of course, there are different ways to approach it. For example, I prefer using a hot knife instead of a heat gun. I’ve seen the consequences of someone cutting electrical wires ending up with a hole in the tube. And there are other methods for applying the cord as well.”

Reassured by a pro, I decided to post this video.

Required Tools

  • Specified nylon rope
  • Masking tape
  • Electric heat gun
  • Air pump

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Preparation
Inflate the tube to the required pressure of 3.5 PSI. Then take the specified nylon cord and check its length.
  2. Prepare the cord ends
Remove 10 to 15 cm of the rope’s outer layers at both ends. This will ease insertion through the handle or rubber eyes.
Wrap the exposed rope ends tightly with masking tape. This makes them easier to pass through the handle or rubber parts.
  3. Threading the cord
Pull the rope through the keyhole of the rubber handle and the rubber eyes.
Make sure 40 to 50 cm of cord extends on both sides after threading.
  4. Seal the cord ends
Cut off the masking tape from the rope ends.
Use an electric heat gun to heat and seal the ends.
This prevents fraying and allows easier insertion into narrow openings.
  5. Lock the cord in the handle
Twist the cord near the handle’s keyhole to create space.
Insert the sealed cord end 30 to 40 cm deep into the handle.
This ensures the cord is securely locked inside the handle.
  6. Tighten and mark
After securing one side, pull the cord from the opposite side to tighten it.
Mark the cord near the keyhole for correct alignment.
  7. Deflate and repeat
Deflate the tube to make the next step easier.
Repeat the locking process for the other side of the cord.
  8. Final steps
Once both ends are locked and tight, re-inflate the tube to 3.5 PSI.
Check the cord tension to ensure everything is secure.

Note

Always heat-seal the rope ends for a clean and easy installation. Repeat heating if the rope frays during the process.
