RNLI Means Royal National Lifeboat Institution

In 2024, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution celebrates its remarkable 200th anniversary.

This milestone will be commemorated with a thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey in London, scheduled for March.

The core consists of volunteers, constituting the majority of our dedicated individuals.

Since its establishment in 1824, it has been a beacon of lifesaving service, having rescued a minimum of 144,000 lives.

Throughout the centuries, this honorable undertaking has undergone a transformative evolution, progressing from the wooden, oar-propelled boats of bygone eras to the contemporary, motor-powered, all-weather vessels employed in the present day.

I feel honored to count numerous RNLI lifeguards among the members of our Facebook group.

RNLI – Float to Live – Dave and Brian’s Story

Do you know which five-letter word could save your life? Float.

When fishermen Dave and Brian fell into the water by a wave that hit the boat from behind, this five-letter word helped save their lives.

And this is why you and all your passengers always should wear lifejackets to help you and them to keep afloat.

I want to express my absolute respect for the RNLI that went out that night to save both men and getting them home alive.

RNLI Trearddur Bay Rescue in Heavy Surf With a RIB in Very Big Sea

With a surfer in grave danger, RNLI Trearddur Bay lifeboat crew had to push themselves and their boat to the limit to save them.

They caught up with the station’s tractor driver and helm to hear their accounts of one of the most challenging rescues they’ve ever faced.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need.

Whether you’re stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.

RNLI Atlantic 85 RIB Tractor Launch and Recovery

RNLI Redcar recently captured some excellent footage of their Atlantic 85 lifeboat, ‘Leicester Challenge III’, in launch and recovery with the Talus MB4H tractor.

The helm would normally reverse the lifeboat into the carriage for recovery, but in rough conditions like those seen here, a ‘net recovery’ is used. The net catches the lifeboat while the crew members place harnesses on the cage so that the boat is not left behind when the tractor moves forward.

The carriage can then be lifted and rotated 180 degrees so that they are ready to relaunch in just minutes.

This year marks 100 years since the first tractor was used to pull a lifeboat, though it took a little while to be fully adopted, with the last horse-drawn lifeboat launching in 1936!
